New Netherlands was established by the Dutch West India Company to capitalize on fur trade in the area. Some furs that would have been traded were fox, otter, beaver, lynx, and mink. They were initially stalled by conflicts with local Native Americans and policy mismanagement, but when they were granted access in 1621, they profited off of the rich soil and forests by selling tobacco and lumber.
